Theatre Technician LINE MANAGER Head of School/Subject Coordinator **** Nantong ****IVES To provide general theatre maintenance and technical support to all events held in the theatre and other venues. To manage all aspects of Health & Safety relative to stage technical installations and associated equipment and administer systems to demonstrate good housekeeping. To respond efficiently to customers’ technical needs and ensure that all technical requirements are recorded and all shows and presentations are closely monitored and meet safety standards. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Rigging and setting up of lighting, setting up of sound equipment, acquiring and setting up props, masking etc. on stage, organising get-ins and get-outs, safe operation of equipment. Construction and decoration of stage sets and props to meet customer requirements and safety standards. Safety, inspection, maintenance, refurbishment and repair of lighting, sound and stage equipment, including overhead gantries and lifting equipment. Co-ordination of Portable Electrical Appliance Testing of theatre appliances in liaison with the Buildings’ Maintenance Department. Providing advice to the Director of Performing Arts regarding the procurement of new technical equipment. Preparation, monitoring, managing, controlling and reporting of delegated budgets. Keeping all technical paperwork, plans, equipment registers, show reports up to date with marking system used to identify equipment belonging to the theatre. To maintain secure and tidy storage of all technical equipment. To maintain equipment inventories. To carry out regular visual inspections of technical installations. Reporting all defects, accidents and incidents in accordance with School policies and procedures. Meeting with users and show producers to understand their technical requirements and maintaining close liaison and monitoring of their activities. Providing appropriate basic technical training and oversight to other theatre users, including volunteers, contractors and pupils assisting with presentations. To provide advice and assistance for other School events, concerts, presentations etc. being held elsewhere in the School, outside of the theatre. Any other duties as required by the Director of Performing Arts commensurate with the post holder’s training and experience. In addition: To liaise closely with other appropriate School staff in pursuance of the post holder’s primary purpose. To comply with all relevant School policies, procedures and instructions. To respect at all times the confidential nature of information concerning the work and business of the School. Other assigned work as requested by the director of music and performing arts department BASIC QUALIFICATION Education: Good general education and appropriate technical or professional qualifications or training or qualified by experience. Language: Native Chinese speaker and fluent in English, Familiar with terminology of the major and able to accurately express meanings. Working experience: A minimum of 2-year relevant experience. Success in a similar role, ideally but not necessarily in a school environment. Working with children. EXPERTISE Outstanding communication in English and Chinese, Good English oral and written communication skills. Significant experience and knowledge of Health and Safety good practice as applied in a theatre environment. Recent and appropriate qualification or training in Health and Safety - desirable. First Aid trained (or be prepared to undergo training). Thorough understanding and appreciation of: Working at height. Safe use of ladders. Use of hydraulic platforms. Use and storage of pyrotechnics. Manual handling. Use of lighting and sound boards/mixers and stage cues. Smoke/dry-ice machines. Familiar with coordinating drama rehearsals and performances. Familiar with Office software. PREFERRED APTITUDES Customer focused with a "can do" attitude. Able to work well in a team and under own initiative. Able to work well with children. Able to establish good working relationships with a wide range of customers and take personal pride in meeting their requirements. Good carpentry and set-building skills. Capable of meeting the physical demands of the post, including being comfortable working at height. Able to work to a flexible timetable, including some evenings and weekends during both term-time and school holidays. Time off in lieu to be agreed with the Director of Performing Arts. In dealings with all visitors to the theatre, able to present a smart, cheerful, good-humoured and professional image that reflects well upon Wellington College.
